Tesla has renamed "Full Self-Driving (Supervised Mode)" on its official websites in Germany, Belgium, and Denmark to "Tesla Assisted Driving" ( TAD ). However, this feature can still only be enabled in markets that have obtained regulatory approval, and the usage boundaries and approval results within the European Union have not yet been finalized.

Tesla, which has adhered to the “FSD” for ten years, has still changed its name in Europe.

On October 9th local time, Tesla's official websites in Germany, Belgium, and Denmark have renamed the feature previously known as "Full Self-Driving (Supervised Mode)" to "Tesla Assisted Driving" (Tesla Assist Driving).

The name has been changed, but the vehicle has not thereby obtained permission to use this feature throughout the European Union. Tesla's official website still indicates that the feature can only be activated in markets that have received regulatory approval.

This name change has a clear regulatory background. On October 6, the German Federal Transport Ministry issued a statement stating that Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer had talks with Tesla in September, and Tesla had proposed to change the name of the system.

The statement also points out that “Full Self - Driving” may lead people to mistakenly believe that the system can undertake all driving tasks; in reality, the system can assist with acceleration, braking, and steering, but the driver must always remain alert and be responsible for driving. Bürg stated that he will support the continued advancement of European approval processes.

The dispute over names involves how drivers understand the boundaries of functions. A system that is capable of performing actions such as turning and changing lanes on urban roads can easily lead users to misunderstand "continuous supervision" as occasional intervention.

The Dutch Vehicle Administration RDW specifically states in the approval documents that the vehicle is not autonomous, and the driver must be involved in driving, ready to take control of the vehicle at any time. Including the word “assisted” in the name helps to align the product description with this division of responsibilities; however, it does not in itself prove that the system has passed all safety inspections.

The approval process also explains why there are different progress levels among European countries.

RDW granted temporary approval to the system on April 10th, and Denmark subsequently recognized the approval given by the Netherlands. According to the Danish transportation authorities, other member states can also recognize it separately; however, for it to be universally applicable throughout the EU, the EU-level procedures must still be completed. Tesla currently lists eight countries in the EU market that have been opened up, including the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, etc., but Germany is not among them.

Previously, Tesla stated that a vote across the European Union might take place on October 6th; the draft agenda for this technical committee meeting only listed 'continuing to discuss the approval request No. 39 proposed by the Netherlands', without mentioning a vote or specifically naming Tesla. According to the current meeting schedule, December is the next possible time for such a discussion and vote.

The Paris Motor Show will provide another opportunity for observation. According to the official website of the motor show, a road test program will be available on October 12th; PENGUIN's announcement indicates that the only car companies participating in this program are PENGUIN and Tesla. PENGUIN claims that this will be its first large-scale public road test outside of China.

In addition to name changes, Germany and Tesla also discussed system speed settings and driving responsibility. The German Transport Ministry stated that both parties reached an understanding on a scheme where the system's maximum speed limit is up to 10% higher, with drivers still being responsible for safe driving.

RDW indicates that the software versions and features used in European and American vehicles do not correspond one-to-one. This means that to determine whether the system can be expanded for use in Europe, it is still necessary to focus on the local versions and their applicable rules.

The Chinese market also needs to distinguish between the features that have already been rolled out and the capabilities that will be made available in the future. In February 2025, Tesla pushed an update for urban road assistance driving to Chinese car owners; however, as of now, although the "Tesla Assistance Driving" optional package is available on its official Chinese website's Model Y ordering page, it is still indicated that this feature will be "available later."

For Tesla, the approval in more countries means that its assisted driving software has the opportunity to reach a larger base of existing car owners. Especially in the European market, facing the increasingly fierce competition from Chinese brands, Tesla urgently needs to FSD establish its own technological brand.

For the industry, this process also provides a window of observation. As functions continue to evolve through software updates, car manufacturers still need to clearly explain to users what is actually available in each market and what drivers must do, and they also need to have the regulatory authorities review the corresponding versions.

The name of TAD has been adjusted, and the usage boundaries within the EU are still subject to approval results before they can be determined.
