Lund, Sweden, October 12, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- International medical imaging company IT and cybersecurity firm Sectra ( STO : SECT B ) have signed an agreement with the UK's Diagnexia to provide them with advanced shared and collaborative workflow services. Diagnexia will now be able to receive pathological cases, send cases, and issue reports in a digital manner from institutions within the UK National Health Service ( NHS ) that require support from external specialists. This move supports the development of a national remote pathology network in the UK and expands patients' access to specialized expertise.
Diagnexia Chief Executive Officer Donal O ' Shea means:It took the UK pathology community ten years to build digital capabilities at each individual site. Sectra had previously completed the connection of more than 500 institutions in the field of radiology. Joining this network means that the foundational work has already been done before the conversation even begins.
Diagnexia is a digital pathology service provider in the UK and also a diagnostic partner for over 30 NHS institutions. The company offers resources of more than 250 specialist pathologists registered with the British Medical Association (GMC) for NHS services, covering routine, emergency, and specialized cases, backlog clearance, as well as support for multidisciplinary team MDT meetings. Its services can be directly integrated with NHS Trust's existing LIS and PACS systems. Diagnexia operates a histology laboratory in Oxford that is accredited by UKAS (ISO 15189:2022), and has digital sample collection facilities in both Oxford and Exeter; both facilities are registered with the UK Nursing Quality Council (CQC).
This service, Sectra Image Exchange Portal ( Sectra IEP ), is a cloud-based, vendor-neutral medical imaging exchange and collaboration platform. Currently, more than 500 institutions are using it, mainly in the field of radiology. Sectra indicates that after a large-scale modernization upgrade, healthcare providers can now use this service for advanced workflows. The platform is also open to specialties other than radiology; in addition to image sharing, customers can also manage work processes between institutions.
Sectra Managing Director for the UK and Ireland Jane Rendall Indicates:With each new connection added, the network becomes that much stronger. As Diagnexia has now joined IEP, a national remote pathology network is rapidly becoming a reality. For hospitals that are already connected to IEP, the benefits are immediate: the reporting capabilities of Diagnexia can now be accessed through the same connections and workflows they are already using today. There is no need for new integrations, no need to introduce additional suppliers, and no need for extra infrastructure. Hospitals can quickly gain the specialized expertise and additional reporting capabilities of Diagnexia to help manage their needs and reduce backlogs in reporting.
The contract was signed in the second quarter of the Sectra 2026/2027 fiscal year and is renewed annually, covering up to 100,000 cases in the first year.
NHS Pathology services are dealing with a growing volume of cases with a limited number of reporting consultants, and the increasing specialization means that the pathologists most suited for a particular case often come from another institution. The article states that nowadays, sending work to external providers typically relies on customized arrangements between laboratories, which includes transporting physical slides. This can slow down the reporting time and impose administrative burdens on both the sending and receiving laboratories. With the service of Sectra, cases can be directly created as tasks from the laboratory's workload list, assigned to the receiving institution, and the completed reports can be returned to the record system of the referring institution itself.
