Key Points

  • IBM Exceeded Expectations in the Third Quarter, with Revenue of $17.1 Billion
  • IBM's stock price reversed its earlier gains during after-hours trading, falling as much as 5% at one point.
  • The company also raised its full-year free cash flow forecast.

Despite the performance published by IBM exceeding expectations, this is still not enough to prevent fluctuations in its stock price.

After the financial report was released, the stock price of IBM reversed its gains.

During regular trading hours on Wednesday, the stock price of IBM rose by 3.94% to close at $251.46, and continued to climb before the release of its financial report.

This sale indicates that despite the performance of IBM exceeding expectations, investors remain cautious, especially after the company's second-quarter results were disappointing.

IBM software revenue grows by 8%, demand for AI increases

In the third quarter, the software business became the main growth driver for IBM, with revenue increasing by 8% year-on-year to $7.8 billion. Infrastructure revenue grew by 4% to $3.7 billion, while consulting revenue remained flat at $5.3 billion.

IBM Chief Executive Officer Alwinder Krishna ( Arvind Krishna ) pointed out that enterprises are increasingly adopting advanced artificial intelligence technologies, and stated that customers are using AI to transform their business models, rather than just testing individual applications.

IBM Upgrades cash flow outlook, but maintains unchanged revenue guidance

After performance exceeded expectations, IBM raised its forecast for annual free cash flow, anticipating an increase of over $1 billion compared to 2025. However, the company maintains its forecast for annual revenue growth of 4% to 5%, calculated at a fixed exchange rate.

IBM has also raised the lower limit of its software growth expectations, currently anticipating a 7% to 8% growth in the software business for 2026.

Despite some improvement in the outlook, the sharp reaction of stock prices indicates that there are still doubts in the market regarding whether IBM will be able to continue its recovery.
