Athletes don't have the luxury of waiting until the annual evaluation to find out how they performed – which might actually be a good thing.

The suspense of waiting for a long string of critical comments can sometimes be even worse than the feedback itself. Moreover, the later the feedback comes, the less relevant it may be as well.

Former Manchester United and Chelsea CEO Peter Kenyon stated regarding Business Insider, considering the nature of sporting schedules, once a problem arises, it must be resolved before the next match, which is often just a few days away.

Kenyon said, 'It's not about 'letting us spend three months to solve this problem.' No, we need to solve it now, because tomorrow we have to continue again.'

Kenyang currently serves as a board advisor for the Atlassian Williams F1 team. He has worked in the sports industry for nearly 30 years, during which time he has led several major reorganizations. He says that this industry has made him realize how important it is to maintain a continuous and immediate feedback loop.

He said that as soon as the driver finishes a session of practice on the track, they immediately sit down with the engineers to receive feedback in order to improve their chances of competing in the qualifying races later that same day or the following day.

Kenyang is responsible for the commercial and marketing functions of the Atlassian Williams F1 team. He said that in a high-performance sports environment, feedback does not flow only from top to bottom; employees are also expected to point out issues to each other when they are discovered.

He said that this expectation has shaped the culture of the entire industry, and it is also reflected in how athletes demand that new teammates meet the same high standards as themselves.

However, this practice is also an industry standard outside of the field. Keaney said that when she was at Manchester United, the front desk receptionists would directly point out the players who did not greet her upon entering the door – this straightforwardness also made her seem very valuable.

Kenyon said, "This power is truly astonishing."

However, this sports executive stated that frequent and candid feedback does not equate to a bullying culture. Kenyon said that managing staff and conducting performance evaluations is not easy, but the best coaches know when to push athletes and when to encourage them.

Kenyang said, "This is a process of continuous change. It is also a process of continuously striving for improved performance."

Enterprise employees may not participate in live competition, but they still have to face high-pressure deadlines in a rapidly changing work environment. Some employers are even adjusting traditional performance evaluation processes to focus on providing continuous feedback and rewarding those employees who perform the best.
