- BlackRock joins the tokenization cooperation agreements of SBI and Startale
- The collaboration will explore ways to connect money market funds with JPYSC.
- The commercial launch date and the participating funds have not yet been confirmed.
BlackRock has signed agreements with Japanese financial giant SBI Holdings and blockchain developer Startale Group to explore connecting tokenized money market funds with JPYSC, which is a regulated, yen-denominated stablecoin.
These companies announced this memorandum of understanding on October 27th. This marks another step in BlackRock's expansion in the field of blockchain-based financial infrastructure.
However, unlike existing tokenized fund products, this proposed arrangement is still in the exploratory stage. The parties involved have not yet determined which funds will participate, which blockchain will be used, nor have they announced a date for commercial launch.
BlackRock explores using Japanese yen-stabilized coins for settlement of tokenized funds
This protocol involves BlackRock Financial Management, BlackRock Japan, SBI Holdings, and Startale Group.
All parties will study three areas: technical infrastructure, business and distribution opportunities, as well as the regulatory requirements necessary to connect tokenized money market funds with JPYSC.
Money market funds primarily invest in short-term financial instruments, while tokenization represents ownership interests through blockchain-based records.
Linking these tools to the Japanese yen-stabilized currency could ultimately make it easier for eligible institutions to convert between fund shares and digital cash, without having to rely entirely on traditional settlement processes.
BlackRock currently operates the BUIDL tokenized liquidity fund, which has previously been extended to Avalanche and other blockchain networks.
Its tokenization strategy for institutions also includes adjustments to funds related to stablecoins, aimed at meeting the needs of digital asset companies.
This new agreement does not imply that BUIDL itself will be integrated with JPYSC.
The Japanese yen-stabilized coin of SBI has become a core component of the advancement on the Japanese blockchain.
JPYSC is issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank in accordance with Japan's regulated trust-based stablecoin framework.
This stablecoin was developed with the participation of Startale, with the goal of supporting payments, settlements, and transactions related to tokenized financial assets.
Coinpaper Previously reported on the launch of JPYSC, emphasizing the differences in its trust bank structure compared to the offshore stablecoin model.
SBI also expands its digital finance business through cooperation with Ondo Finance, with the related collaboration focusing on the tokenization of Japanese stocks.
On October 16th, SBI and Startale also announced their plans to explore interoperability between JPYSC and Open USD. Open USD is another stablecoin project denominated in US dollars.
This work is independent of the new agreement with BlackRock, although both efforts aim to connect different components of institutional digital finance.
The Significance of BlackRock's Participation
The participation of BlackRock enables this proposed system to gain a wealth of professional experience in asset management; SBI provides distribution channels as well as an understanding of Japanese financial regulations.
Startale brings blockchain development capabilities, which include infrastructure-related work designed for tokenized securities.
At the time this protocol was introduced, financial institutions were assessing whether blockchain technology could reduce settlement frictions without weakening the protection of existing investors.
BlackRock has previously explored blockchain-based liquidity through the integration with stablecoins via BUIDL, which demonstrates how tokenized fund shares can interact with digital payment assets.
In addition, this asset management company has recently also supported the tokenized portfolio products developed in collaboration with Ondo Finance.
