The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican Mike Johnson from Louisiana, pledged to transfer power peacefully after the election and called absurd the concerns from outside that President Donald Trump and Republican members of Congress might question the election results if Democrats gain control of Congress.

On Tuesday, as there was still one week left until the midterms on November 3rd, Johnson responded to a question regarding MS NOW at a campaign event of Republican Representative Mike Lawler from New York State, stating: "We will follow the constitution. The constitution stipulates that once a state certifies the results of congressional elections, the elected members shall take their oath of office. On January 3rd, I will do the same for all those present."

He also said, "I may not like some of the outcomes, but that is our system. It would be absurd for anyone to suggest otherwise."

Democrats and advocates for voting rights are preparing for potential challenges. If control of the House of Representatives changes hands – which is widely anticipated – or if there is a shift in control of the Senate, related disputes could arise. The Senate race is more closely contested at present. Currently, the Republicans hold the majority in both chambers of Congress.

Trump continues to make erroneous claims that there was widespread fraud in the 2020 election, which led to his defeat. Earlier this year, he called for the elections to be "nationalized" and repeatedly questioned the security of mail-in voting, while also implying that non-citizens could vote on a sufficiently large scale to distort the election results. These statements have exacerbated the aforementioned concerns. Earlier this month, the Trump administration filed a lawsuit against California regarding the issue of non-citizen voting.

The U.S. Department of Justice also sued Alaska last week, attempting to prevent the state from certifying election results in a situation where voters were confused. Republican Senator Dan Sullivan will be listed on the ballot alongside Daniel J. Sullivan, who is a retired teacher. Republicans claim that the sole purpose of having this person on the ballot is to act as a "disturbance" candidate.

Johnson was one of Trump's key allies in Congress when Trump attempted to overturn the election results after the 2020 general election. He said on Tuesday that the issue of a peaceful transition of power was "a bit ridiculous."

Johnson told reporters, "Of course, we will transfer power peacefully. But that transfer won't happen, because we will retain the majority of seats, and I will continue to serve as Speaker of the House, firmly steering the ship."
