Just like an episode of the real-life version of “Suits,” the decline of Wall Street’s established “white-collar law firms” Weil, Gotshal, and Manges has been a hot topic in the legal industry this week. Now, Silicon Valley has also joined in this drama.
TechCrunch It has been confirmed that AI, a law firm that has been established for two years, has received an offer from Crosby to acquire some of its assets, including its trademarks, brands, and some unspecified internal data. It is also reported that Crosby is attempting to recruit a portion of the firm's 1,200 lawyers. The Information was the first to report on this offer.
This once-renowned Weil Gotshal confirmed to The New York Times this week that it is preparing to hold a vote on dissolution in the coming days. According to The New York Times, after the leader considered to be the successor refused to take over, several of the firm's most profitable lawyers left, and the merger with competitors Willkie Farr and Gallagher, which was highly anticipated, was also put on hold. Subsequently, the firm began to move towards liquidation.
At the same time, the founders of Crosby believe that they represent the future of law firms. Unlike Harvey or Legora, which sell internally developed AI technologies to existing law firms, Crosby is itself a genuine law firm. The company uses its own AI to provide legal services and promises to complete related work at a speed never achieved before.
The startup has raised approximately $85 million in funding, including a $60 million Series B round completed in March this year. This Series B round was led by Lux and Index, with the seed round lead investor being Sequoia. Elad Gil, 01 Advisors, and Bain Capital Ventures also participated in the investment. Crosby made its debut out of stealth mode in 2025, bringing with it $5.8 million in seed capital.
At present, no one has pointed out that the rise of law AI is one of the factors contributing to the decline of Weil Gotshal, but AI may become the key to the future development of the legal industry. The specific terms of this bid have not yet been disclosed, nor can it be guaranteed that Crosby will ultimately prevail. However, if it succeeds, the legacy of Weil Gotshal may be reborn in some way, although it will be a law firm prioritizing AI that will carry out this transformation.
