Key Points
- Maple holds 225 million XRP, corresponding to a loan of 152 million US dollars.
- Two major XRP mortgage loans are due in December 2026.
- Repayment and refinancing arrangements may change the XRP mortgage requirements.
Approximately 225 million XRP, valued at around $281 million, are being used as collateral for a stablecoin loan of $151.8 million through Maple Finance. As the repayment deadlines for the two main loans approach December 2026, the third loan is scheduled to mature in January 2027.
According to the positions disclosed on the transparency dashboard of syrupUSDC and syrupUSDT, institutions can borrow US dollars using their holdings as collateral without having to sell XRP immediately. However, as these loans approach maturity, the market is also beginning to pay attention to how much of this collateral will remain within the lending system.
These data highlight a new source of demand for XRP other than transactions and payments: institutional borrowers are increasingly using digital assets to provide collateral for financing.
XRP worth $281 million supports three institutional loans
Disclosures from Maple show that 142.77 million XRP tokens support its syrupUSDC product, and an additional 82.31 million XRP tokens are used as collateral for syrupUSDT positions.
The aforementioned collateral collectively guarantees loans of approximately $96.61 million for USDC and $55.19 million for USDT. The total principal of the nominal stablecoins amounts to about $151.8 million.
These three positions have different repayment arrangements.
Calculated based on the valuation at the time of disclosure, the collateral ratios for these loans range from approximately 179% to 189%, which means that the value of the XRP pledged by the borrowers is significantly higher than the loan amounts.
It is worth noting that the loans issued by Maple come from Ethereum-based liquidity pools, while the collateral for XRP remains within the native custody system of XRP Ledger.
This arrangement is different from the proposed XRPL Lending Protocol. The latter is designed around on-chain credit infrastructure and off-chain underwriting, rather than relying on automated collateral settlement.
XRP What happens after the loan is due?
The expiration date in December does not automatically mean that millions of XRP will be sold.
The borrower can repay the debt and request the release of the collateral, or they can refinance the existing loan, or negotiate new borrowing arrangements to keep XRP in a pledged state.
This difference is very important, because the XRP used as collateral may be locked for several months at a time, rather than being merely transferred briefly between wallets as in the case of payment and settlement.
Ripple has been exploring similar institutional credit models, and RippleX has also previously stated that XRP mortgages could become an important use case in institutional lending.
However, there is no guarantee for refinancing. If the price of XRP falls below the collateral requirements stipulated in the contract, the borrower may need to add more assets or reduce the outstanding debt.
According to the lending procedure of Maple, if the notice for additional margin is not resolved in a timely manner, it may ultimately lead to the liquidation of the collateral, thereby converting the pledged XRP into a market sell order.
There is currently no concrete evidence indicating that these three positions are facing liquidation.
XRP Borrowing growth comes with significant risks
The scale of collateral also has an impact on the decentralized financial statistics data of XRP Ledger.
DefiLlama attributes approximately $281 million of the value of XRP Ledger DeFi to Maple, while the corresponding figure for the entire network is about $318 million.
This means that, under the statistical criteria of that time, this lending arrangement accounted for approximately 88% of the total reported amount, although the actual financing took place on Ethereum.
Other protocols are also expanding similar use cases. Flare has already launched XRP mortgage loans, which are supported by RLUSD. As of the end of September, the number of FXRP coins minted on its network had exceeded 145 million.
At the same time, institutions involved with Ripple and Clearpool are also developing more credit infrastructure.
