OpenAI has signed multiple agreements with the energy, investment, and government departments of the United Arab Emirates. At the same time, this artificial intelligence laboratory is seeking funds from investors in the region as part of a $20 billion financing round.
On Monday, the Abu Dhabi Media Office stated that as this artificial intelligence laboratory finalized arrangements for multiple industries to utilize its models, CEO Sam Altman met with Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, Khalid Bin Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
In recent years, the Middle East has become a key hub for artificial intelligence, with major American tech companies signing agreements to build large data centers in the region. However, ongoing conflicts also pose a challenge to this attractiveness.
As the demand for growth capital continues to increase, both OpenAI and Anthropic have turned to investors in the Middle East in search of a larger pool of capital.
The investment firm headquartered in Abu Dhabi, MGX, has invested in both of these laboratories. This includes co-leading a $30 billion financing round for Anthropic in February, as well as co-leading a $122 billion financing round for OpenAI in March. CNBC reported on Saturday that OpenAI is currently seeking to raise $20 billion in a new round of financing, which will be co-led by investors from the United Arab Emirates.
In his statement, Altman said: "Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates are setting bold global standards for the integration of artificial intelligence in both the public and private sectors to ensure that the benefits of AI reach everyone. We are proud to support the UAE's ambitions, which are built on a common commitment to security, accessibility, and responsible innovation."
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company ( ADNOC ) and G42 signed an agreement to deploy cutting-edge technology from OpenAI. Sovereign investment institutions Mubadala ( Mubadala ), Inception42 , and OpenAI signed an agreement to apply advanced artificial intelligence capabilities to investment analysis.
The Abu Dhabi government announced a cooperation plan with this artificial intelligence laboratory to convert government policies and regulations into a machine-readable format. Inception42 and OpenAI also signed a five-year agreement to promote the adoption of cutting-edge artificial intelligence in government, business, and education sectors.
