On Thursday, the stock market experienced a significant sell-off. Investors' concerns about the slowdown in artificial intelligence development not only impacted such transactions themselves but also dragged down the broader market.

The Nasdaq Composite Index, which has a high weight of technology stocks, fell by more than 5%, and at the close, it entered a correction zone along with the small-cap Russell 2000 Index. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by more than 1,800 points, a drop of over 3%; the large-cap S&P 500 Index also fell by more than 4%.

These declines wiped out most of the gains from the rebound after the general elections on Wednesday, and even more than that.

The following are some of the most shocking figures from the sharp decline of that day:

  • The Nasdaq Composite Index recorded its worst single-day performance since April 4, 2025, when the index fell by 5.82%.

  • In percentage terms, VIX closed up 69.66%, marking the third-largest one-day increase since 1990.
  • On the New York Stock Exchange, there were 2,344 declining stocks compared to 416 rising stocks, a ratio of about 6 to 1.
  • In the NASDAQ Composite Index, there were 4,166 declining stocks compared to 855 rising stocks, which is approximately a ratio of 5 to 1.
  • All 11 sectors of the S&P 500 closed lower, with the technology sector leading the decline, falling by 7.30%, marking its worst single-day performance since March 16, 2020, when the same sector tumbled 13.92%.

US tech bulls in a "mass exodus"! "Selling drives more selling," with no signs of buying interest entering the market
U.S. tech stocks suffered a heavy setback on Thursday. Analysts believe that the root cause of this decline lies more in the breakdown of position structures rather than a collapse in macroeconomic fundamentals. The Nasdaq fell by over 5%, the S&P 500 by over 4%, and the Dow Jones by over 5%. Bloomberg analysis suggests that when the stocks with the largest declines are also those that have been most heavily shorted, it often indicates that bears have made a successful judgment, and the bulls who previously opposed them are forced to exit the market. Margin calls and index rebalancing further exacerbated the selling pressure. Market participants also warn that even after the significant drop, tech stock valuations remain high, and there are currently no clear signs of buying interest entering the market.
