Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated on Friday that the electric vehicle manufacturer will "gradually cease" production at its Gigafactory in Texas around the middle of next year.
In a post published on X early Friday, Musk said that after the discontinuation of this vehicle model, which he hailed as the future of the pickup truck segment, space will be freed up for the production of Cybercab autonomous taxis.
Cybertruck is currently only produced at Tesla's factory in Texas, where Model Y and the two-seater Cybercab are also manufactured. Musk has always touted Cybercab as a key product for the future development of this automotive company.
Elon Musk did not clarify whether the company would produce Cybertruck at other factories, but he later responded to a user on X. The user described this update as “the end of an era” and stated that Cybertruck is “the best car Tesla has ever made.”
Musk responded, "That's right, but the Cybertruck team will still exist for a long time to come."
Tesla began delivering Cybertruck at the end of 2023. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comments regarding CNBC.
Cybertruck and its highly controversial design have attracted a group of niche enthusiasts. However, despite Elon Musk's prediction before the company went public that annual sales would eventually reach 250,000 units, it failed to achieve mass market sales.
When Musk released this pickup truck in 2019, he said, "The look of trucks hasn't changed in decades. It's like for 100 years. Trucks have basically remained the same all along. We wanted to try something different."
Although Tesla does not disclose sales figures by model or region, Cox Automotive estimates that the sales volume of Cybertruck in the United States last year was 20,237 units, which is a 48% decrease from 38,965 units in 2024.
The specifications of the Cybertruck also do not meet the level advertised by Tesla earlier on; in some cases, they are even inferior to those of leading fuel-powered pickups. In addition, this model has faced multiple quality and production issues, including several recalls.
