Indian users can use stablecoins to purchase gift cards
2026-09-08 18:36:38
According to CoinMeta, as reported by the Indian Economic Times, some overseas platforms are allowing Indian users to use stablecoins such as USDT or other crypto assets to purchase gift cards and vouchers that can be used in India for expenses such as food and groceries, fuel, mobile phone recharges, takeaway services, and gold. In this process, users typically transfer crypto assets from their private wallets to the overseas platforms, which then provide exchange codes through local gift card partners in India. One platform that issued over 16 million cards to Indian users exchanged 1 USDT for about 88 rupees, whereas at that time, the price of USDT in the Indian market was over 95 rupees. This practice has drawn the attention of relevant Indian authorities, and potential regulatory issues include cross-border payments, foreign exchange regulations, taxation, and anti-money laundering requirements.
