Upbit-Naver Transactions Face Regulatory Conflicts
2026-09-15 16:40:07
According to CoinMeta, reports by CryptoNews suggest that new regulations on ownership of crypto assets in South Korea could lead to governance conflicts regarding Naver Financial's acquisition of Upbit operator Dunamu. The Congressional Research Service has noted that the proposed limits on major shareholders of virtual asset exchanges may interact with existing requirements for subsidiary ownership. The Research Service emphasizes that the two systems could result in a structure where one rule sets a minimum shareholding percentage, while another restricts the shareholding of major shareholders. The study also points out that if Naver Financial subsequently complies with South Korea's holding company framework, related issues will become significant. Naver Financial plans to make Dunamu its wholly-owned subsidiary through a comprehensive share exchange.
