Analyst: FCA approval will not lead to UK banks opening up to crypto
2026-09-16 22:41:01
According to CoinMeta, as reported by Crypto News Flash, the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is about to implement stricter standards for crypto companies. However, regulatory approval does not guarantee unrestricted access to customers' bank accounts. The new crypto regulation will come into effect on October 25, 2027, and companies conducting regulated activities will need to be authorized under the Financial Services and Markets Act. Nevertheless, banks can still freely block or restrict payments to crypto platforms. Currently, 9 out of the UK's 10 largest retail banks have imposed such restrictions. This change will go beyond the existing anti-money laundering registration framework, and the final rules will cover a wide range of crypto activities, including trading platforms, custody, trading, staking, and lending. Existing registrations will not automatically convert to the new authorization; the application period is from September 30, 2026, to February 28, 2027.
