UK economy grew more than expected in the second quarter, GDP final figure revised up to 0.5%

According to CoinMeta, data released on Wednesday by the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that the UK economy recorded a quarter-on-quarter final value of 0.5% in the second quarter of 2026, higher than the preliminary figure of 0.4%. This growth rate exceeded market expectations, indicating that the UK economy still has resilience before the recent significant rise in energy prices and borrowing costs. In the first half of this year, the UK economy performed better than expected, and despite the renewed inflationary pressures from conflicts in the Middle East, consumers maintained their spending during the summer. ONS, the head of economic statistics at Liz McKeown, stated that the latest quarter's growth in the service sector was even stronger, meaning that the size of the UK economy is slightly larger than previously estimated. However, the outlook for the UK economy has deteriorated in recent weeks, and it is expected that the pressures faced by businesses and households will further increase in the second half of the year.
