According to CoinMeta, the hackers, identified as Bitget, transferred approximately $4 million into Zcash's private payment system, making it more difficult to trace the funds. Upon reviewing the transaction records, it was found that on Wednesday, 2746 ZEC were transferred into Zcash's latest privacy pool, Ironwood. Blockchain investigator ZachXBT first flagged these transactions on Wednesday. The funds flowed through two intermediary addresses, which were confirmed by Bitget to be associated with the attackers, who received nearly 18,917 ZEC in the attack on September 24th. Zcash provides both public and private payments; investigators can see the amounts entering the privacy pool, but the transfers within the pool conceal the senders, recipients, and amounts, making it even more challenging to link subsequent withdrawals to the stolen coins. These three deposits account for about 15% of the stolen ZEC. Other proceeds were transferred across chains through exchange services, with CoinDesk previously tracing about $6.3 million in exchanges from Ethereum to Bitcoin.
