According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is investigating former Republican Representative Adam Kinsinger's market forecasting transactions related to a presidential pardon he received from Joe Biden. These transactions were conducted in December 2024 and January 2025 through accounts associated with Kinsinger. He stated that he placed bets predicting whether he would receive a pardon and also bet on whether Biden would issue a preventive pardon before leaving office. In January 2025, Biden indeed pardoned Kinsinger and other members of the committee investigating the attack on the Capitol on January 6th. Screenshots provided by Kinsinger show that he earned $823 from these transactions, and he claimed to have made about 25 trades, most of which were losses. He denies any improper behavior, stating that he had left Congress two years prior to placing the bets and did not have any "insider information." The CFTC prohibits users from betting on contracts in which they are directly involved, and regulations also prohibit the use of important non-public information in markets under its jurisdiction.
