According to CoinMeta, former National Crime Agency (NCA) official Paul Jones (Paul Chowles) was ordered to repay approximately $2.4 million for stealing 50 bitcoins nine years ago, which were worth about $77,000 at the time. Under the Criminal Proceeds Act of 2002, the British prosecution issued a confiscation order against Jones on Wednesday. Jones stole and concealed these 50 bitcoins while investigating the dark web market Silk Road 2.0. The prosecution stated that Jones transferred these 50 bitcoins from the seized wallet in 2017 and attempted to cover up their whereabouts. Following the investigation, police found devices with private keys at Jones' home and traced the funds through blockchain analysis. Jones was sentenced to five years and six months in prison in July 2025 for theft, transfer of criminal property, and concealment of criminal property.
