Meta Saves $355 Million in Taxes with Zuckerberg's Salary: Whether Musk Will Follow Suit Remains to Be Seen
2026-10-01 07:24:19
CoinMeta US stock news: Meta successfully reduced its tax burden by approximately $355 million by listing CEO Mark Zuckerberg as a researcher on its tax forms. However, the United States Internal Revenue Service ( IRS ) has stated that there are issues with Meta's approach. The stock options that Zuckerberg received in 2005 are considered research wages by Meta, while IRS believes these options were compensation for his work from 2008 to 2010. Meanwhile, Musk exercised his Tesla stock options in June, earning a nominal profit of about $116 billion, far exceeding Zuckerberg's $410 million. Tesla's annual report shows that the company holds an unused federal research tax credit of $1.83 billion. The tax court has not yet made a ruling on Zuckerberg's case, and its decision will affect whether the CEO's option payments can be counted as research wages.
