According to CoinMeta, California Governor Gavin Newsom (Democrat) signed a bill on Wednesday that prohibits California businesses from collecting data on employees' brain activity or using monitoring tools driven by AI to infer employees' emotional states. The bill (AB 1883) restricts employers' use of various systems, including video and audio surveillance, continuous work hour trackers, geolocation, and electromagnetic tracking. If these systems utilize artificial intelligence to collect neural data or identify employees' emotions, they will be subject to strict restrictions. The bill stipulates that each violation can result in a civil fine of up to $500, and law enforcement will be carried out by the state labor commissioner and public prosecutors.
