SBI Completes Acquisition of Bitbank, Becoming Japan's Largest Crypto Exchange
2026-10-01 21:33:02
CoinMeta US stock news: SBI completed the acquisition of Bitbank on October 1st for a transaction amount of 46.7 billion yen (approximately 289 million US dollars). This acquisition has placed SBI at the top in terms of managed assets among Japanese crypto exchanges, and the services for Bitbank's approximately 960,000 users will not be significantly affected. The acquisition was carried out in multiple stages. SBI's wholly-owned subsidiary, SBICAH, initially purchased 53,704 shares from Bitbank's founders and other holders, followed by a third-party placement, and finally completed the acquisition by repurchasing shares from Bitbank's major shareholders. Bitbank also brings along a financial services license and substantial liquidity for altcoins. Analysts believe that it would be time-consuming and costly for SBI to build these capabilities on its own.
