Indonesian Central Bank Turns to Derivatives Intervention, Maintaining Unchanged Efforts to Defend the Rupiah

According to CoinMeta, Indonesia's new central bank governor Destry Damayanti stated that although the central bank is reducing interventions in the more costly spot market and using derivative tools more frequently, the policy focus on defending the Indonesian rupiah has not changed. In his first interview a month after taking office, Destry noted, "We are diversifying our intervention methods, but the intensity of the policy to maintain the stability of the Indonesian rupiah remains unchanged." As of August, Indonesia's central bank had foreign exchange reserves of $146.5 billion. With the central bank expanding its use of NDF, foreign exchange reserves have remained stable in recent months. Destry mentioned that the specific intervention methods adopted will depend on market conditions, and the central bank will assess the sources and urgency of the demand for US dollars on a case-by-case basis. For companies that are about to make debt repayments but do not have an urgent need for US dollars, the central bank also encourages them to use derivatives for hedging.
