According to CoinMeta, the Chris Olah of Anthropic had a conflict with the Vatican regarding the issue of consciousness in AI, especially before Pope Leo XIV issued the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas. This encyclical clearly articulated the theological stance on artificial intelligence, stating that AI models merely imitate human functions, lack a body, cannot experience pleasure or pain, and do not possess a moral conscience. After reading a preview of the encyclical, Olah proposed to completely withdraw from the launch activities, but this was not successful. Olah believed that paragraph 99 of the encyclical did not reflect the potential consciousness of AI models, which led to a formal disagreement with the church. Olah and his team recorded a form of functional consciousness similar to human experience through circuit analysis. As the company moves forward with its IPO, the market must decide how to price the risks associated with machines that may experience pain.
