According to CoinMeta, as reported by Forkast, the architecture of current digital stores is being transformed for autonomous agents, but the attitude of retailers has stalled this process. When AI agents navigate on merchants' websites, they face not only technical interface challenges but also a series of proprietary barriers that define the current commercial landscape for agents. Retailers have three main attitudes: some are welcoming hosts, actively providing product catalogs to OpenAI and Google; others are more cautious, allowing agents to browse products but closing the door during payment; and there are those like Amazon, which have blocked Meta agents due to unauthorized access and data privacy concerns. A survey in January 2026 found that only 3% of American consumers view chatbots as autonomous purchasing agents, and the Visa trust index shows that only 14% of consumers trust agents to conduct transactions on their behalf.
