Polymarket Sues Dutch Regulatory Authorities, Seeking to Revoke Prohibition on Predictive Markets
2026-10-06 12:56:28
According to CoinMeta, Polymarket has filed a lawsuit with a Dutch court, requesting the revocation of a ban imposed by the Dutch gambling regulatory authority on its market forecasting services. Polymarket argues that these event contracts are derivatives and should be regulated by the Dutch Financial Markets Authority (AFM), rather than the Dutch Gambling Authority (KSA). KSA demands that Polymarket cease services to Dutch users within 4 weeks; otherwise, a fine of 420,000 euros per week will be imposed, up to a maximum of 840,000 euros. KSA reports that inspectors registered accounts using a Dutch IP address, recharged 10 euros through a Dutch bank account, and purchased "yes" shares worth 1 dollar in the "next Dutch Prime Minister" market. Polymarket implemented a blockade on IP on February 18th, but KSA determined that this measure was taken one day after the deadline and decided to impose a fine of 420,000 euros. On June 23rd, KSA dismissed Polymarket's objection, stating that Dutch law prohibits gambling on non-sport events, and licensed institutions are not allowed to accept cryptocurrency payments.
