New York Fed: Consumer inflation expectations rise to the highest level since May 2023

According to CoinMeta, the Federal Reserve of New York reports that consumer inflation expectations have risen to their highest level since May 2023. The Fed’s Consumer Expectations Survey shows that in September, one-year inflation expectations climbed to 3.9%, up from 3.58% in August. Expectations for inflation over the next three years have increased by 0.1 percentage points to 3.3%; expectations for inflation over the next five years remain unchanged at 3.0%. Overall, expectations for the labor market are more favorable for workers, but expectations for salary increases over the next year have fallen back to the average of the past 12 months, which is 2.6%. More households expect their financial situation to deteriorate; at the same time, expectations for spending growth have risen to 5.5%, the highest level since May 2023. Consumers expect gasoline prices to rise by 4.8%, food prices by 5.5%, medical costs by 9.2%, college education expenses by 7.5%, and rent by 6.8% over the next year.
