According to CoinMeta, Daniel Ryan was sentenced to 32 months in prison for demanding 20 BTC (approximately $750,000) from his employer. He was a core infrastructure engineer at an industrial company in New Jersey and locked the company's network, threatening that more servers would be paralyzed if the payment in Bitcoin was not made. Ryan was sentenced by Judge Michael A. Ship in Trenton on September 28, 2026. The 59-year-old pleaded guilty in April to two charges: one related to extortion for threatening to damage protected computers, and the other to intentional computer damage. According to a complaint filed on FBI, between November 8 and November 25, 2023, Ryan used an unauthorized administrator account to remotely access the network, deleted 13 administrator accounts, and locked 3,284 workstations.
