Justin Drake: The crypto industry needs to prepare for a 'survival mode', AI Mathematical threats ECDSA
2026-10-08 06:37:59
According to CoinMeta, Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake stated that the crypto industry should begin to consider quietly transferring funds to new wallets in order to prepare for signature schemes that could undermine the security of Bitcoin and Ethereum before the advent of quantum computers. He advised large holders to prioritize transferring their assets to addresses where the public key is hidden after hashing, in order to avoid exposing the public key after signing. Although Drake believes that current cryptography has not yet collapsed, he warned that a breakthrough in quantum computing could occur within months rather than years. He linked this warning to the rise of AI-generated mathematics, pointing out that the 722 mathematical manuscripts published by OpenAI could accelerate this process. Drake also mentioned that future quantum computers might be able to break the elliptic curve cryptography that protects cryptocurrencies with fewer qubits than expected.
