According to CoinMeta, the Aptos Foundation has announced a plan to adjust the token economy model. It intends to reduce the staking reward rate for APT from 5.19% to 2.6% through a governance proposal, increase the gas fee by 10 times, and set the maximum total supply of APT at 2.1 billion tokens. The foundation commits to permanently locking and staking 210 million APT tokens, which accounts for about 18% of the current supply, and will not sell or distribute this portion of tokens anymore. Instead, only staking rewards will be used to support operations. The foundation also plans to link future ecosystem funding to performance indicators and explore the use of cash and future revenues to repurchase APT. As the initial token unlocking cycle ends in October 2026, the annual unlocking volume is expected to decrease by 60%. The foundation hopes to gradually move APT towards deflation by reducing new supply, increasing transaction fees for destruction, and potential repurchases.
