NFL Requests to Classify Sports Prediction Contracts as Gambling

According to CoinMeta, the National Football League (NFL) has requested the U.S. Supreme Court to classify sports betting contracts as gambling rather than financial derivatives. This classification could affect how the NFL and its competitors deal with federal or state gambling regulatory agencies, thereby impacting the growth of the industry. On Thursday, NFL submitted a court brief supporting the petitioners from New Jersey, challenging the ruling of the Third Circuit Court that granted the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) exclusive authority over all sports betting contract issues. NFL argues that traditional swap contracts help to reduce financial risks, whereas sports betting contracts involve risks based on the outcome of games. NFL considers this a constitutional issue due to conflicting rulings from different appellate courts. NFL also calls for strict measures against manipulation and advocates for communication with the league. According to a report by NFL, on the first day of the season's trading, the amount involved in games related to these contracts reached $1.8 billion. As per Artemis's data, as of October 8th, the total trading volume in the betting market since the beginning of the year amounted to $330.4 billion, with sports betting accounting for approximately 44%.
