NCUA proposes 26 types of stablecoin account codes, expanding on the report from Genius Act to credit cooperatives

According to CoinMeta, the National Credit Cooperatives Administration ( NCUA ) issued a notice on October 9, 2026, proposing its first specific reporting infrastructure for stablecoins, with plans to introduce 26 new account codes to facilitate regulation when credit cooperatives interact with payment stablecoins. This proposal is the latest response to Genius Act, aimed at ensuring that the activities of credit cooperatives within the stablecoin ecosystem are precisely monitored. The new account codes are divided into four categories, covering the custody of reserve assets, key management, and the risks associated with direct exposure to payment stablecoins, among others. This move signifies that the credit cooperative system will be incorporated into the same stablecoin regulatory framework as the banking industry, and it is expected to increase the workload by 47 hours per quarter for reporting.
