According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Department of Justice ( DOJ ) is conducting another investigation into Binance, which may face additional fines. In 2023, Binance agreed to pay $4.3 billion to resolve a U.S. criminal case. Less than three years later, federal prosecutors are examining whether the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange has violated the terms of that agreement. The head of the Department of Justice's Criminal Division, Tysen Duva, confirmed that officials are reviewing Binance's compliance. The investigation covers three main aspects: First, Binance is alleged to have had accounts related to financiers Babak Zanjani process approximately $850 million in funds through its platform. Second, prosecutors accuse two Chinese companies of using Binance accounts to launder profits from the sale of Iranian oil, involving an amount of over $1.5 billion. Finally, prosecutors are examining whether Binance intentionally allowed prohibited transactions. No allegations of misconduct have been made against Binance or its employees. Past cases of other companies violating the agreement have shown that possible outcomes include stricter compliance oversight or additional fines.
