The huge gap behind prosperity: Tech giants see rising profit margins, while the other 493 American companies remain stagnant

According to CoinMeta and OneMillion.AI, the profit margins of the seven tech giants continue to rise, while the remaining 493 American companies have remained stagnant. Data released by Torsten Sl, the chief economist of the American asset management giant Apollo, shows that AI has not yet brought significant financial returns to large American companies outside of the tech giants. Excluding the seven tech giants, the revenue and profit margins of the 493 companies in the S&P index have remained largely unchanged, and U.S. total factor productivity data does not show any clear signs of AI. Data from the enterprise payment platform Ramp indicates that the top 10% of companies in terms of expenditure account for 99.5% of model hosting and inference costs, and about 80% of the top 1% of companies in terms of spending have venture capital backgrounds. Apollo statistics show that during the second-quarter 2026 financial reporting season, 69% of S&P 500 companies disclosed their use of AI, but only 2% published indicators to continuously track its effectiveness.
