AI Servers are even competing for circuit boards: HP and Dell worried about supply in 2027, Amazon directly invests in circuit board factories

According to CoinMeta, the AI craze has led to a surge in demand for circuit boards. When planning their supply chains for 2027, companies such as HP and Dell found that even the previously inconspicuous PCB (printed circuit boards) may face shortages. In September this year, Amazon invested approximately NT$1.59 billion to acquire a stake in Taiwan's PCB company, Kinimage Electronics, shifting from customer to shareholder. AI servers require circuit boards with more layers and lower signal loss, which has driven a sharp increase in demand for key materials such as special fiberglass cloth and copper-clad laminates. Suppliers are prioritizing orders for AI that offer higher profits, putting pressure on the production of ordinary servers as well. The delivery time for some ordinary server PCB components is now approaching one year. It is estimated that Nippon Denso Fibre Products of Japan controls about 90% of the global T-glass special fiberglass cloth market, and new production capacity is not expected to be available until mid-2027 at the earliest. The chairman of Taiwan's major circuit board manufacturer, Hon Hai Precision Industry, warned that there could be a shortage of about 20% for some key materials in 2027, with the delivery time for some chip carrier production equipment exceeding 30 months.
