Australian core inflation accelerates, markets increase bets on RBA interest rate hikes

According to CoinMeta, Australia's core inflation has accelerated, further strengthening the case for the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to raise interest rates to curb price pressures. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the average core inflation rate at the end of the third quarter CPI rose by 3.7% year-on-year, higher than the growth rate in the previous quarter and also exceeding economists' expectations of 3.6%. Following the release of the data, the yield on three-year government bonds, which are sensitive to monetary policy, rose by up to 8 basis points to reach 4.93%. Traders estimate that the probability of the RBA raising interest rates when it concludes its policy meeting next Tuesday is 78%, up from 70% before the inflation data was released. Robert Thompson, the head of interest rate strategy at CMB Bank, stated: "I think it's now pretty certain that there will be a rate hike. Considering the RBA's recent statements, as well as the concerning details in this report—core inflation indicators are still too high, and key sub-items such as market services prices have risen again after excluding items with larger fluctuations—if there is no rate hike, I would be very surprised."
