According to CoinMeta, OpenAI is planning to purchase Google’s AI chips in order to reduce its dependence on Nvidia. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that this move has not yet been confirmed by either company, and the specific price, quantity of chips, or delivery date have not been disclosed. OpenAI is one of Nvidia’s largest customers, and the chips sought are Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), which are designed specifically for the computations of AI models. Google first released these chips in 2016 and stated that its data centers have been using them for over a year. A report from June 2025 indicated that OpenAI had begun renting Google’s TPU chips, and the company described this as an early-stage test with no plans for large-scale deployment yet. This purchase will mean owning the hardware instead of paying for it on an hourly basis to Google. OpenAI mentioned in its job listings in San Francisco that it is looking for an engineer to lead the optimization of its cutting-edge models on TPU.
