The Bitcoin treasury strategy of Strategy is undergoing changes. The company sold approximately 6,916 Bitcoins this summer and then bought back 4,603 BTC coins. Market data firm Kaiko believes that this indicates a shift from the past pattern of "only buying, not selling" to a more proactive treasury management approach.
Bitcoin begins to serve the capital structure
This summer, Strategy will use Bitcoin to replenish liquidity. The relevant arrangements have been clearly outlined in its Bitcoin liquidation plan; the company can sell Bitcoin to restore its dollar reserves, pay dividends and interest, and repurchase some securities.
A regulatory document from June indicated that the company was permitted to sell up to $1.25 billion in Bitcoin to replenish its cash reserves. Subsequently, Strategy completed several sales transactions: one sale of 3,588 BTC for approximately $216 million; another sale of 1,638 BTC for about $104.7 million; and then another sale of 1,690 BTC for around $108.6 million.
Some of the funds were used to pay preferred stock dividends and to repurchase STRC securities. This has made Bitcoin more than just a long-term holding asset; it also begins to play a role in providing liquidity within the company's capital structure.
Sold and then resumed increasing holdings
Kaiko points out that what is more noteworthy is not the act of selling itself, but rather Strategy re-purchasing 4,603 BTC after replenishing its reserves and raising new cash. This indicates that the company has not given up on Bitcoin; instead, it sold when there was a need for increased liquidity, and then re-invested after conditions improved.
This approach is closer to the traditional corporate treasury management, rather than the previously familiar narrative of 'continuous buying and long-term holding without selling.' As the company's cash reserves increase, management also has more flexibility in balancing debt interest payments, preferred stock dividends, and asset allocation.
Still the largest holder of coins among corporations
Despite adjustments to the strategy, Strategy remains the global listed company with the largest holding of Bitcoin, with a total of over 845,000 Bitcoins on its balance sheet.
Kaiko mentions in broader research on digital asset treasuries that with the expansion of spot Bitcoin ETF and the decline in valuation premiums for treasury companies, investors can now obtain direct exposure to Bitcoin through regulated products. This is also forcing related companies to provide more complex capital arrangements than simply holding coins.
For Strategy, the new change is not just the sale of nearly 7,000 bitcoins this summer, but also the changing role of bitcoin within the company's system: it can continue to be accumulated when financing conditions are favorable, and it can also be sold when liquidity is needed.
