Google has officially shortened the release cycle of Chrome from four weeks to two weeks. With the launch of Chrome for desktops, as well as iOS and Android, this adjustment has already been put into effect. The company stated that changes in the security environment during the AI era are one of the main reasons driving this acceleration.

Security fix: Shortening of the warning window

Google indicates that automated AI tools and community vulnerability reports are generating an increasing demand for patches and updates. With the accelerated release pace, security fixes can be delivered to users' devices more quickly, reducing the time lag between when vulnerabilities are discovered and when they are patched.

The company specifically mentioned that reducing the time interval between fixing and submitting code to the public repository and users actually receiving the updates helps to narrow what is known as the "N-day" patch gap. This means that after vulnerability information becomes known, the time window available for attackers to exploit will be shorter.

Browser competition accelerates in synchronization speed

Faster updates not only serve security purposes but also help Chrome to launch new features more quickly. Google believes that this is just as important in the AI era, as AI assisted development is driving more browser products onto the market.

Although the previous browser project ChatGPT Atlas has been discontinued, there are still several competitors in the market vying for market share, including Brave, Dia, Opera Neon, Perplexity's Comet, as well as DuckDuckGo browser, among others.

The industry has begun to follow suit and make adjustments.

Google is also testing the addition of more AI features to Chrome, and hopes to continue iterating at a faster pace, which further enhances the necessity of shortening the release cycle. The report mentions that Mozilla, Microsoft, and Brave have already started adopting a two-week update schedule.

This is not the first time that Chrome has adjusted its release cycle. Google once shortened the update cycle from six weeks to four weeks in 2021 in order to improve patch management efficiency. Now, by speeding up again, it shows that browser manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on security responses and feature iterations.
