San Francisco and Boise, Idaho, rank second and third respectively, in a ranking based on the factors that Americans consider most important.
Lehi, Utah, September 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The storage and parking market platform Neighbor.com announced today that Provo, Utah, is the most neighborhood-oriented city in the United States. Neighbor.com stated that in the 2026 rankings released to celebrate "National Good Neighbor Day," San Francisco and Boise, Idaho, made it into the top three.
Neighbor.com indicates that this year's calculation formula was developed with the joint participation of Americans. A nationwide survey asked over 1,000 adults to rate the characteristics that a "neighborhood-spirited city" should possess, and their responses determined the weight each of the seven categories should have. Among these, safety is considered the most important, followed by providing direct assistance to neighbors.
According to Neighbor.com, Provo won first place due to its warm community atmosphere and safe neighborhoods. According to data from the United States Internal Revenue Service ( IRS ), in 2023, taxpayers in Utah County reported donating 4.5% of their income to charity. This is the highest proportion in this study, more than three times the average of over 100 cities. Provo also has one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the ranking, coming in at fourth from the bottom, and it ranked in the top ten in five out of seven categories. Local community events ranked second, and volunteer services tied for third. The city's position has improved from fifth in 2024, and it has made it into the top six in each of the past four rankings.
Neighbor, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Joseph Woodbury said: "From Provo to San Francisco, and then to Boise, this year's award-winning cities have proven that the spirit of community has nothing to do with the size of the city. The key lies in whether people are willing to give generously and support each other."
He also said, "This is precisely the spirit we aim to foster at Neighbor.com. Here, people from all over the country turn their idle garages or driveways into ways to help their neighbors. More than a third of Americans can name no more than two of their neighbors by name, so on this 'Good Neighbor Day', we hope that everyone can simply say 'hello' to one another."

However, both groups indicate that their sense of closeness to their neighbors is roughly similar.
- Few young adults closely associate voting with a sense of community: With five weeks left until the midterms, only 8% of adults under the age of 35 consider voting to be the most important factor in a "community-minded city," while among those aged 55 and above, this proportion is 24%.
Methodology
Neighbor.com ranks 100 cities in the United States based on the following indicators: violent crime, property crime, charitable donations, volunteer service, voter turnout, population growth, and local community activities. Each city's score is determined by its performance relative to the average level.
