Voice AI has received significant attention in some consumer-grade applications: the largest category is meeting notes, and another is the dictation function driven by AI, which removes filler words and organizes the text more neatly. Fireflies.ai, which has already established itself in the meeting notes field, is now entering the dictation market through a new feature in Mac and Windows applications.
This dictation function, named Fireflies Talk, works in a similar manner to other similar products on the market, such as Wispr Flow, Willow, or SuperWhisper. Users can press the Fn key on Mac or press the Ctrl + Win keys on Windows to start speaking. Regardless of which application is currently open, Fireflies will record the voice and transcribe it into neat text, which will then be filled into the text box of that application.
"People speak at a speed that is about three times faster than typing, and voice is a more natural way to get work done. Talk We want to extend Fireflies beyond meeting scenarios to emails, Slack, documents, reminders, and anywhere else you work," Fireflies, the CEO of Krish Ramineni, told TechCrunch via email.
The company stated that this dictation feature has been incorporated into the existing subscription packages and is not charged separately. This is not a completely new strategy. Wispr took the opposite approach by offering a meeting summary tool for free to its existing dictation application users. Speechify has also added dictation functionality to different applications.
Fireflies indicates that the company will not retain any recordings; the transcribed content from dictation will be stored locally.
Like other meeting note-taking tools and productivity suites, Fireflies is attempting to automate work processes based on meeting transcripts and the context built for users, and plans to create an assistant that can leverage this context.
Last year, the company launched “mini-apps” to extract insights from meetings in various ways; last month, the company introduced another feature that can manage inboxes and draft emails on behalf of users.
