OpenAI follows Meta into the hot personal AI agency market, but will users pay?

After Meta heavily launched the Muse AI proxy earlier this month, OpenAI introduced its personal AI proxy at the DevDay developer conference on Tuesday. The market is enthusiastic about the prospects of personal proxies, but with OpenAI, Meta, Google, and Apple all making moves in this area, it remains to be seen who will truly be able to retain users and convince them to continue paying.

Earlier this month, after the significant release of Muse AI proxy by Meta, OpenAI also entered the personal proxy market on Tuesday with the launch of Dots, kicking off the next major competition in the artificial intelligence market.

At the annual DevDay Developer Conference, OpenAI described Dots as an “always online” agent designed to assist users in completing a range of tasks. Since its release three weeks ago, Muse has been highly sought after by investors, driving the stock up by 29% in September and setting the stage for its best single-month performance since 2013.

This enthusiasm highlights the appeal of personal agents, as well as the prospects for consumers and office employees to use this technology to book trips, pay bills, reply to emails, and complete many more tasks. However, the entry of OpenAI not long after the launch of Muse also reminds us that there are a few large companies in the AI market that are focusing on similar products, and their ability to lock in users is not strong.

Google refers to its Gemini Spark product as "your 24/7 personal AI assistant," while Apple attempts to enhance its position in the AI competition with a redesigned Siri AI, describing it as "a significantly more capable and personalized assistant."

The CEO of the human resources technology startup Homebase, who is also a user of various AI proxy-related tools, stated: "I believe what we are witnessing is an inevitable evolution of this technology. Perhaps it’s not surprising that these developments are occurring almost at the same time."

It's not just big companies that see opportunities.

AI Assistant startup Instinct announced on Monday that it has raised $1 billion in financing from venture capital firms including Sequoia Capital, with a valuation reaching $10 billion. Another startup Town is also reportedly seeking a valuation of $1 billion.

Town CEO Jean - Denis Gr stated in a statement that OpenAI's launch of Dots "further validates the existence of this category and the demand for work assistants".

Gr said to ze, "This has been the focus of Town from the very beginning." He also expressed his welcome to competition.

On Tuesday, everyone's attention was focused on OpenAI. Prior to this, investors and enthusiasts of AI had been eagerly awaiting what products this ChatGPT developer would release following last week's Meta Connect Developer Conference. At that conference, Meta announced the upcoming AI devices, including a pendant device. CEO Mark Zuckerberg described Muse as the “core” of the company's AI strategy.

During his speech at the DevDay conference held in San Francisco, Altman described Dots as "extraordinary" and stated that it is "built to handle almost anything you can think of." Although developers could already use the existing tools from OpenAI to manage a large number of AI agents for various office tasks, Dots promised to make it easier for employees to use this powerful digital assistant to help with work involving tools such as Slack and Microsoft Teams.

More inspiring than the AI safety topics

As new proxy products are being launched intensively in the market, this provides a more exciting narrative for AI company. At the same time, leading laboratories are facing increasing scrutiny as concerns arise that the most advanced models may pose a risk of getting out of human control.

On Tuesday, while Altman was participating in DevDay, his second-in-command Greg Brockman was in Washington attending a lunch meeting hosted by President Donald Trump for top technology leaders. The theme of the meeting was AI security. Just over two weeks prior to that, Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei published an article calling on AI companies to slow down the development of cutting-edge models, which caused a stir throughout the industry.

However, whether consumers are willing to pay remains a question. The service identified as Muse can be used for free up to a certain limit, after which it can be purchased starting from $20 per month. The service identified as Dots is only available to users who subscribe to a package costing $100 per month or more.

Waldmann indicates that even though Muse has accumulated millions of downloads in various app stores, it does not necessarily mean that people are actively using it or other AI proxies.

Waldmann said, "People will give it a try, but does it really create value? Has it become a part of daily habits?"
