Throughout history, women have always sought emotional advice, whether by turning to columnists like “Dear Abby”, writing letters to “Cosmo”, or simply chatting with close friends. In the era of social media, people can also post anonymously on emotional forums like Reddit, or refer to content creators who discuss such topics on social platforms.
Today, two sisters are launching a startup company Hot Girl Hotline aimed at young women, with a focus on bringing AI into such conversations.
You might think: With AI technology having developed to this extent, why are entrepreneurs still creating a product that causes women trouble when it comes to dating? The answer is—yes, that's right.
The reality is that people are already seeking such advice through large language models (such as LLM) in applications like ChatGPT. The team believes that this behavior should be handled with more caution.
Regrettably, as we have seen, discussing personal topics with general-purpose chatbots can sometimes lead to disastrous consequences, especially for those who are already in a vulnerable psychological state. For example, ChatGPT faced a wave of lawsuits due to alleged manipulative conversational strategies; the plaintiffs claimed that these practices led to negative effects on mental health and in some cases even triggered suicide.

Balia indicates that the approach of this startup is to focus on providing high-quality advice based on behavioral science, while at the same time making the experience feel like chatting with a trustworthy friend or older sister. The conversations are usually conducted in a Socratic manner, with AI helping users to come to their own conclusions through questioning.
"This is not intended to replace communication with real people. It is also not a clinical recommendation, and we have put in place many security measures... We take security issues very seriously," said Baila. She mentioned that for example, when the dialogue triggers risk signals, users will be directed to resources such as the 988 crisis hotline.
"We believe that the key to high-quality advice is not just knowing what to do next, but also understanding why you should do it. That's a very important part of it," Sumi added.
It is worth noting that this AI also knows when to end the conversation; it will not keep asking questions, leading you deeper and deeper into repeated entanglements. On the contrary, it will encourage the user to return to the real world and take action, rather than indulging in endless contemplation of the problem.

These sisters believe that there is market space for such applications, because not everyone wants to post their problems online for others to comment on, and sometimes, one also doesn’t want to discuss personal, dating, or intimate issues with friends.
Friends might bring their own biases into conversations, or users might not want to expose things their partners have done before deciding whether to continue working things out or end the relationship.
“This doesn’t mean you’re trying to replace your friends; you just want to gain a different perspective,” Balia said when talking about this “hotline.”
This app also provides personalized recommendations based on each user's values, goals, identity, and preferences.
In terms of underlying technology, this startup relies on a variety of AI models and encrypts user data during transmission and storage. The company also does not sell this data, nor does it use it to train models. When using third-party AI models, the company adheres to a zero-data retention policy as well.
Hot Girl Hotline plans to monetize through a monthly subscription fee of $9.99, and currently hundreds of its most active users are already paying for the service. In the future, it may also incorporate advertising.
Love advice is just the starting point for this company in serving young women. The company also plans to expand into other areas, such as beauty products and lifestyle.
Headquartered in New York, Hot Girl Hotline still operates on its own funds and will participate in the upcoming TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield 200. The product is currently available on iOS and web platforms.
