U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday in the United States that he would speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the death of a laboratory worker in Siberia, who is suspected of having died from plague.
The White House stated that when asked by reporters about the time of the call, Trump indicated that the call was scheduled for "soon." When separately asked about the views of U.S. intelligence agencies regarding this incident, Trump said, "So far, we are engaged in very in-depth discussions. We should be able to provide a report on this matter by tomorrow at the latest."
Trump has previously stated that despite the tensions caused by Moscow's war in Ukraine, Putin is a person he can cooperate with. On Monday, Trump also offered American assistance to Russia regarding this fatal plague incident.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) stated on platform X on Wednesday that the agency "is aware of and is closely monitoring reports of a suspected case of pneumonic plague in the Irkutsk region of Russia, which has resulted in one death."
This American public health agency stated that the circumstances surrounding this case have not yet been confirmed. CDC mentioned that pneumonic plague can be transmitted from person to person through respiratory droplets during close contact.
However, CDC indicates that 'there are currently no signs that this poses a broader threat to the United States,' and adds that the agency and its interdepartmental partners are prepared and will continue to closely monitor the situation.
The World Health Organization has informed CNBC that, based on the current information, their assessment is that the risk to the general public is low.
