Platinum membership is built on more than a decade of AWS's investment in cloud-native, secure, AI technologies, and critical open-source infrastructure at Linux Foundation.
San Francisco, October 7th / PRNewswire / -- The non-profit organization Linux Foundation, which promotes large-scale innovation through open source, announced today that Amazon Web Services ( AWS ) has become a platinum member of the foundation, which is its highest level of membership. This expansion is built on AWS's participation in the Linux Foundation ecosystem for over a decade and strengthens its role in supporting open-source technologies and communities that underpin modern infrastructure.
AWS has contributed technical resources, engineering expertise, and funding to the extensive projects and communities under Linux Foundation. In 2024, AWS transferred the open-source search and analysis suite OpenSearch and established OpenSearch Software Foundation, continuing to participate as a chief member. AWS is also one of the initiators and founding members of Akrites and Agentic AI Foundation ( AAIF ).
Linux Foundation CEO Jim Zemlin stated: "Open source is the foundation that supports the global technology and economic infrastructure, and maintaining this infrastructure requires long-term investment from the companies that build and contribute to it. We are delighted to welcome AWS as a Platinum member and to expand our collaboration throughout the entire open source ecosystem."
Today, AWS maintains an active member status in 25 projects and foundations under Linux Foundation, including those to which they have contributed themselves. AWS is a platinum member of Agentic AI Foundation ( AAIF ), Cloud Native Computing Foundation ( CNCF ), PyTorch Foundation , and Yocto Project . AWS is also the chief member of Academy Software Foundation ( ASWF ), Alpha - Omega Foundation , FinOps Foundation , Jupyter Foundation , OpenSearch Software Foundation , Open Source Security Foundation ( OpenSSF ), Post - Quantum Cryptography Alliance , Valkey , and x402 Foundation .
Amazon Web Services, the person in charge of open source, said: "Open source is where our industry collectively solves the most challenging problems. Linux Foundation is responsible for managing projects that define modern computing on a global scale, from Kubernetes and PyTorch to MCP, OpenSearch and Valkey. Whenever we build infrastructure that goes beyond AWS's own scope and is capable of solving broader issues, we look for a neutral home to help it continue to develop. Becoming a Platinum member reflects our long-term commitment to maintaining the health of these ecosystems and innovating in an open environment."
As a Platinum Member, AWS will obtain a seat on the board of directors of Linux Foundation and will continue to work within the global project ecosystem of that foundation to support the development and long-term sustainability of key open-source technologies.
