Araceli Biosciences and Ginkgo Bioworks ( NYSE : DNA ) announced on Thursday that they have integrated the Endeavor ® high-content imaging instrument of Araceli into Ginkgo's autonomous laboratory located in Boston, Nebula.
Araceli indicates that Endeavor is the fastest high-content imaging system in the world, capable of integrating cell imaging with real-time analysis into Nebula's existing technical framework. It provides researchers with large-scale, organized datasets necessary for training and validating AI models in drug discovery.
Nebula is built upon Ginkgo's Reconfigurable Automation Carts ( RACs ). Each RAC serves as a modular unit that integrates robotic arms, automatic sample transportation, and unified control software, allowing for the addition or rearrangement of instruments as work processes change. Ginkgo states that dozens of scientists conduct real research on over 100 RAC units at Nebula every day, submit experimental plans, and receive data the following day. Nebula can autonomously perform the work equivalent to that of multiple scientists in parallel, operating day and night, and occupies about one-third of the space required by traditional laboratory benches to accomplish the same task.
Endeavor is capable of imaging a 1536-well plate in less than four minutes and has been integrated into the system based on RAC known as Nebula. It operates in parallel with the ongoing experiments within this system. With the help of ClaireRT ™ software from Araceli, Endeavor analyzes each well while collecting images. If a well does not meet the preset standards, the system can alert the operator or Nebula, or it can stop imaging to address the issue before the experiment continues.
Araceli Biosciences President and CEO, Matt Beaudet, stated: "The next generation of AI in drug discovery requires a completely different scale of biological data. The laboratories themselves are undergoing changes. They now generate cell data, interpret what they see, and respond in real time. Ginkgo is achieving this through Nebula, while Araceli brings high-content imaging and real-time analysis on a large scale into this closed loop."
Ginkgo Bioworks, co-founder and CEO, Jason Kelly stated: "Whenever you add a first-class instrument to your independent laboratory, its value increases. With your own independent laboratory, any scientist can use Endeavor's first-class high-content imaging capabilities and seamlessly connect it to all other instruments. This is the significance of an independent laboratory: to integrate the best tools in biology into one system, run your experiments on the same software, 24/7 without interruption."
