Key Points
- The S&P 500 and NASDAQ weakened due to declines among chip manufacturers.
- Micron tumbles nearly 6% due to concerns about competition from China
- Strong bank financial reports prevented a broader market sell-off.
On Tuesday, October 13th, the U.S. stock market declined, with artificial intelligence stocks once again facing heavy selling pressure, dragging down the S&P 500 index and the Nasdaq Composite Index. Prior to this, Asian tech stocks had already seen a sharp drop.
The S&P 500 index fell by about 0.1% on the day, while NASDAQ declined by 0.4%. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by about 300 points, or approximately 0.6%, mainly driven by stronger financial and healthcare companies' earnings reports.
This divergence highlights the deepening concerns in the market regarding whether the valuation of AI, semiconductor competition, and massive investments in computing infrastructure will yield sufficient returns.
Why did the S&P 500 and NASDAQ fall today?
The backdrop for the weakening market is growing concerns among investors regarding China's ChangXin Memory Technology Co., Ltd. ( ChangXin Memory Technologies ). The company recently announced progress in developing more advanced memory chips.
Investors are concerned that intensified competition from China may weaken the pricing power of established semiconductor suppliers, especially those that have benefited from the surge in demand for AI servers.
Broadcom's AI warning intensifies market concerns

This sale also occurred after Broadcom's CEO Hock Tan made remarks. He compared speculative investments in the field of artificial intelligence to gambling in casinos.
At a technology event in Singapore, Tan stated that investors are pouring capital into the AI businesses, yet they do not fully understand the financial prospects of these businesses.
His remarks exacerbated the existing concerns in the market regarding whether large-scale infrastructure investments can truly generate the profitability reflected in technology valuations.
These concerns had previously prompted a broader sell-off of AI stocks, with all 30 constituents of the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index falling during trading on Monday.
The Asian markets experienced particularly severe declines on Tuesday, with Samsung Electronics falling by 7.4%, and SK Hynix dropping by about 10%.
Why is the Dow Jones rising while the Nasdaq falling?
Despite the weakness in tech stocks, other sectors provided support for the broader market.
This comparison indicates that when market concentration is high, it may lead to significantly different performances among the major U.S. indices.
