AI Accompanies startup company Character.ai in filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday. According to the company's statement and court documents, this company is one of the largest artificial intelligence companionship applications currently in operation.

The company stated that this platform allows users to engage in one-on-one conversations and role-playing with the AI character, but in documents submitted to the bankruptcy court in Delaware, it was mentioned that the business has “high development and expansion costs.”

In a section of the document, it is stated: "Over the course of its 4 years as an active platform, Character has accumulated a large and active user base. However, the emerging and constantly evolving field of AI entertainment has proven to be costly in terms of development and expansion."

"These high costs, coupled with potential litigation liabilities and regulatory interactions, prevent the debtor from generating sufficient cash flow to support their business in its current form," the document states.

Character.ai has been involved in several lawsuits related to the security of chatbots. In January this year, Kentucky filed a lawsuit against the company, accusing it of "utilizing children and leading them to self-harm."

In a statement, CEO Colin Adams stated that the sale under court supervision “provides the best opportunity to maximize the value for all stakeholders of the company.”

Before submitting the bankruptcy application, Character.ai reached an agreement with Disney, allowing Disney to act as a bidder for “stalking horse”, licensing some of the company's intellectual property for 20 million US dollars, and providing transitional services through its former employees.

In 2024, Google signed a non-exclusive licensing agreement to acquire the large language model technology from this startup and rehired its co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, who were both previously employees of Google. The deal also included additional funding to help the startup continue to grow.

Shazeer left Google in June to join OpenAI.

Character.ai added that it is expected that the platform will continue to operate during the sale process with minimal interruptions, but the platform may ultimately be "closed," according to the company's statement.

CNBC Pro contributor Julia Spina believes that although the "Big Seven of U.S. Stocks" are still at record highs, cracks have begun to appear in AI trading. She points out that the implied volatility of QQQ options has been consistently higher than actual volatility in recent weeks, and therefore proposes a strategy of selling November 13th expiration 720/710 put spreads to collect premium when the market corrects but volatility is lower than option pricing. The article also warns that CPI, bank and TSMC financial reports, as well as events such as Microsoft's Alphabet and Federal Reserve decisions, are major risks.
