Leaders in the field of process orchestration have obtained the highest level of non-classified authorization, enabling secure and intelligent automation for critical combat missions.
McLean, Virginia, October 29, 2026 / PRNewswire / -- Appian Today, it is announced that Appian Defense Cloud ( ADC ) has been granted a temporary operational authorization ( Impact Level 5, IL5 ) by the U.S. Department of War ( DOW ) ( Provisional Authorization to Operate , PA ). Building upon its existing IL5 level of Appian Government Cloud ( AGC ), this certification enables DOW to leverage intelligent process automation innovations from Appian to deploy mission-critical workloads under enterprise-level security guarantees.

Appian Chief Technology Officer Michael Beckley stated: "Our next-generation platform ADC has obtained IL5 certification, marking an important step forward for Appian in providing mature and secure intelligent process automation to support the actions of combat personnel for DOW. This production-ready platform represents an evolution in Appian's long-term defense capabilities, bringing modern proxy-based intelligence and process orchestration directly into mission operations, and is equipped with enterprise-level protection mechanisms."
Appian indicates that its defense business origins can be traced back to a contract over twenty years ago to design the architecture for Army Knowledge Online ( AKO ), which later developed into one of the largest military intranets in the world. As one of the earliest cloud service providers to obtain FedRAMP authorization in 2015, Appian states that the company has continuously demonstrated its ability to meet the requirements of continuous monitoring and security compliance in public sector environments.
Scale and Deployment in the U.S. National Defense Field
Appian indicates that its defense business deployment has nearly quadrupled over the past 12 months. Currently, Appian supports:
- Over 2,000,000 active DOW and IC users rely on this platform for their daily operations;
- Over 100 task platforms that automate critical tasks;
- Multiple key operational groups, including contract drafting, legal case management, intelligence and security, foreign arms sales, as well as logistics and maintenance.
The company stated that the key capabilities that have been implemented include 12 key projects for the Army that have already been put into production, among which are those targeted at the U.S. Army: Total Army Combat, and, Training Munitions Information System, and TACTMIS. Appian mentioned that it took only 110 days from the contract award to completion of this system, which can support over 10,000 active users globally, providing speed and value for training and combat missions. By unifying the ammunition management processes among the active Army, Army National Guard, U.S. Army Reserves, and joint partners, TACTMIS offers the scale, security, and visibility required to support the overall military readiness and advanced leadership decision-making.
National defense-level capabilities that meet the compliance requirements of DOW
Appian indicates that ADC is built on its next-generation cloud-native architecture and can provide comprehensive commercial platform capabilities within the boundaries that meet the requirements of DOW, including:
- Orchestration Proxy Intelligence:Natively supports proxy-assisted workflow creation, intelligent document processing ( IDP ), generative capabilities, and proxy-based insights;
- Data Fabric Layer:Connect dispersed data sources without migrating core records, providing immediate context for proxies and users;
- Process Intelligence:Provides real-time process monitoring and analysis to track operational efficiency and auditing capabilities.
Appian indicates that the U.S. Department of War and all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces trust Appian to improve government processes. The company states that more information can be found at: https :// appian.com / defense.
