Sony Electronics announced on Wednesday the launch of MDR-3R, a new pair of wired headphones that are compatible with USB-C. The design of these headphones is inspired by the original MDR-3 which was first introduced alongside the Walkman TPS to L2 players.
Walkman and MDR-3 were launched in 1979, helping to create a brand-new way for people to listen to music on the go freely. Nearly half a century later, as listening methods have become increasingly diverse, wired headphones have once again gained attention due to their simplicity, ease of use, and the fact that they do not require charging or pairing.
MDR-3R continues the concept of MDR-3 of "enabling people to enjoy music freely both indoors and outdoors," preserving the portable audio culture heritage reflected in the original design. At the same time, it incorporates modern features such as seamless USB-C connectivity, a built-in microphone for calls, and a wired remote control.

Faithfully reproduce the design of MDR-3.
While retaining the original MDR-3 experience value, it has been redesigned for modern usage scenarios, continuing the mission of bringing music freedom to every corner of the world, a concept that the original MDR-3 also helped to popularize.
The new headphones also retain the MDR-3 lightweight, open-design, providing a lasting sense of comfort even during extended listening sessions.
Upgrades in functionality and connectivity for modern lifestyles
With the support of USB-C, these headphones can connect smoothly to compatible devices, such as smartphones. No charging, pairing, or updating is required; simply plug them in and you can immediately enjoy music or videos.
It is also equipped with a microphone for calls, as well as convenient wired controls for easy operation.
Brings a richer sound quality that highlights the charm of music even more.
Based on the original design specifications, MDR-3R has been re-engineered using the same 23-millimeter driver units as MDR-3 to recreate a sound quality that is close to the original. While remaining faithful to the original sound characteristics, subtle adjustments have also been made to accommodate modern listening preferences. Its natural and balanced sound, a hallmark of Sony headphones passed down through generations, is capable of showcasing the full charm of each piece of music.
