Researchers make significant progress in potential attacks on Bitcoin and Ethereum

According to CoinMeta, researchers successfully reduced a benchmark value by over 50% in potential attacks on Bitcoin and Ethereum. As reported by Coindesk, more than 100 participants collaborated with AI coding agents over a period of about eight weeks to reduce the computational resources required for such attacks, which could potentially help in cracking encrypted wallets. This result surpasses previous benchmarks set by Google, although the comparisons are not entirely identical. Currently, Bitcoin and Ethereum have not been cracked. This improvement only covers one step of an attack, not the entire process. It is worth noting that there are no existing quantum computers capable of utilizing this achievement to crack these two networks. Better software could lower the barriers before better hardware becomes available. The lead author, Jieyi Long, stated, “This is urgent because remedial measures will take several years and cannot be applied retrospectively.”
